Attribution evidence is rarely improved by pretending uncertainty does not exist. Screenshots are cropped, resized, darkened and recompressed. Some contain a strong recoverable signal; others retain only part of one.
That is why ExactMark reports confidence instead of presenting every result as absolute.
What the score represents
A confidence score describes the strength of the recovered match between submitted evidence and candidate protected sessions. It helps an investigator distinguish a clear leading candidate from an ambiguous result.
The analysis considers the signal recovered from the image and how that signal compares with other eligible sessions. A stronger separation between the leading candidate and alternatives supports a stronger result.
Evidence quality matters
The amount of recoverable information can be affected by:
- How much of the original page remains visible
- Cropping and resizing
- Image recompression
- Messaging-platform processing
- Rotation or perspective changes
- Dark overlays and interface modifications
A clean screenshot may retain substantially more signal than a small crop that has passed through several transformations. ExactMark is designed to work with imperfect evidence, but it cannot recover information that is no longer present.
How to use a result
A confidence score should be reviewed alongside the surrounding context: the matched viewer, session, page, timing information and the original evidence file. It is an evidential starting point for an investigation, not a replacement for judgement.
For a strong result, the next step may be to preserve the original artifact, review the associated session history and document who handled the evidence. For an inconclusive result, retaining the original file and locating a less altered copy may improve the available signal.
Honest uncertainty is more useful
Responsible attribution separates what the evidence supports from what it does not. A system that calls every result definitive may sound reassuring, but it gives investigators less trustworthy information.
Confidence-scored attribution lets teams move quickly without hiding ambiguity. It provides a clear candidate, a measurable strength and the context needed to decide what happens next.
